PodLeaders.com episode 21

Today’s guest on the show is BusinessWeek’s Heather Green - Heather, along with Stephen baker, writes Blogspotting - the businessWeek blog about blogs! More recently, Heather has been hosting the BusinessWeek podcast on The Business of Podcasting.

With a background of reporting on both blogging and podcasting, I thought Heather would make for an interesting guest on the show and I wasn’t disappointed.

Here are the questions I asked Heather and the times in the interview at which I asked them:

Can you give our listeners some background on who you are and how you got to be BusinessWeek’s blogger and podcaster on ‘The Business of Podcasting‘? - 0:40

How long have you been doing the Business of Podcasting blog now? - 2:13

How do you see the maturation of the business models around podcasting taking place? - 3:09

You have been doing blogging and podcasting on the BusinessWeek site, will you do Video Blogging any time soon? - 5:18

How are you going about tracking numbers on your podcast? - 7:53

Have you heard of the services provided by SONR? - 8:42

Do you think video will overtake podcasting? - 11:13

I assume a lot of the money will go towards the music genre of podcasting, which of the genres do you see as emerging as the biggest and most lucrative? - 14:29

What do you make of the Blogher conference (http://www.blogher.org/) and do you think women need to be encouraged to blog and podcast more? - 16:15

Do you think there should be special programs to bring women into tech? - 17:21

Do you think there is a higher uptake of Podcasting amongst women than in the ‘normal’ tech sphere? - 19:08

What kind of hardware do you guys use? - 19:57

Do you know what you will be using for the video blogging? - 21:03

You have been doing tech stuff for some time now, do you break out of tech, do you have other hobbies? - 22:27

    D’Oh!

And you’d think I’d be more sensitive to that what with people constantly mis-spelling my name!

I have corrected it now in the post - thanks for pointing it out.

    Cheers,

    Tom.

Excellent interview. I love the format because it truly does feel like you’re eavesdropping on a conversation between two people who share a passion and have a lot of knowledge. I love Heather’s honesty, never coming across as “of course I knew that.” Regarding the comments about video being slower to catch on: don’t forget that there are hundreds of thousands of commuters who DON’T drive to/from work, but take a train, bus or carpool. They’re an ideal audience for a video podcast. Also, one of the beauties of video podcasting is that you can download a podcast, pop it in your docking station and watch it on TV. So if the content is compelling enough, video podcasts will, in fact, supplant TV in some cases. Maybe we’ll start looking forward to rerun season because it’ll give us “free” time to watch stored up podcasts!

    Marilynn,

thanks for your comment - this interview was an unusual one for me. It was on a topic about which I actually knew something - hence my becoming more involved. Normally I edit myself out of these podcasts as much as possible and let the interviewee do the talking but this time, I kept my own contribution in - I wasn’t sure how it would go. Thanks for the vote of confidence!

You are right, of course, about tv being supplanted somewhat by video blogs - however, the quality (esp. with the dawn of HDTV) of the tv pic will help it to maintain its dominance for the present, I think.

Heather mentions SMASHcast, the student podcast. That’s at http://smashcast.org

I recently did a long IM interview with the originator of that program, Mini Kahlon, that turned out very interesting. It’s at http://netsquared.org/kahlon She could be a good person to have on this show too, Tom. She’s very smart, tells great stories about the program.
