What are the rules for making a podcast? are there legal issues with music?

I am interested in starting a podcast with a music theme. Are there any legal issues I should be aware of? Specifically, am I able to use songs from major labels without the concern of fines/legal troubles/etc? Also, what are some tips to making a podcast? What software is needed? Any suggestions are helpful.

You CANNOT use any songs in your podcasts without paying the proper royalties. Despite what some people might say, you can’t use 30 second clips either. You can and will face a very expensive lawsuit, which you will lose.
If you wish to do this, contact ASCAP and BMI for the proper way to get a license.
